Chapter 14

Chapter Fourteen

We wait for what feels like hours for a doctor to come for us. Sawyer paces restlessly in the room, with not even his name being enough to give any sway while we wait. Being a Bergion means nothing when there are sick people needing care in every room in an ER and a Hippocratic Oath holding all the doctors in the vicinity responsible. To the lay person, this makes sense. To people with money like Sawyer, it’s a thorn in their side.

“How long does it take for a doctor to come check on someone? When there’s an emergency, shouldn’t their response time be, I don’t know, emergent?” Sawyer hisses on yet another lap around the room. I had lost count at this point on how many times he had walked around it.

“They’re moving as fast as they can, Sawyer. Besides, that nurse gave me a reversal agent to try to slow down the pains in the event that they were contractions, and it seems to have helped. I haven’t had a pain in a while.”

Sawyer shakes his head. “Not good enough. What if something’s wrong with the baby that they’re not seeing? I mean, shouldn’t they at least have done an ultrasound?”

I couldn’t disagree with him on that point, so I didn’t. “I’m sure someone will be in soon.”

Sawyer sighs and sits down in the chair next to the bed.

Finally, I think. One of the drugs they had given me had calmed me down enough that I wasn’t really panicking anymore, but his pacing counteracted it just enough to put me on edge.

Sawyer takes my hand and starts playing with my fingers, almost absentmindedly as he stares off at some unmarked spot on the white sheet of the emergency room blanket.

“I’m just worried,” he mumbles.

I swallow, deciding that now is as good a time as any to bring up my questions. We both need a distraction, and I’m hopped up on enough pain killers to excuse myself if the conversation goes south.

“Is that why you called me your girlfriend?” I ask softly.

Sawyer glances up at me then, holding my gaze for a nanosecond before looking away. “You caught that, huh?”

I nod. “Yeah.”

“I was just . . . you know, my name has sway. So, if they knew that you were important to me, they’d make more of an effort.”

“I’m important to you?”

Sawyer looks at me like I’m an idiot. “You are carrying my child, Genevieve.”

“Right, sorry. The baby.” What an idiot, I tell myself as I feel my cheeks staining red. There’s no way this was ever going to be about me.

“Gen—”

Luckily, I’m saved from whatever excuse he’s going to give me by the doctor walking in, trailing a nurse with an ultrasound machine behind her.

“Genevieve, hi there. Dr. McKenna. I hear you’ve been having some spotting and pain?”

I nod. Sawyer has returned to his standing position by my head, glaring down the nurse and doctor like his own life depends on it. I swallow my sigh.

“Well,
